Building Biology

A holistic approach to design and construction that focuses on how buildings affect human health and the natural environment. This methodology originated in Germany as Baubiologie in the 1970’s alongside growing concerns about “sick building syndrome”.

Whether designing a new custom home, renovating an existing structure, or consulting for other design professionals, Terra Surea is guided by the core principles of building biology:

Non-toxic materials (low/zero VOC)
Breathable wall assemblies
Mold-resistant construction
Natural materials (lime plaster, solid wood, clay, mineral wool)
Reduced EMF exposure
Emphasis on daylighting and natural ventilation
Moisture control as a primary design strategy
Avoiding foam products wherever possible
